When I was a teenager over forty years ago I visited a small museum at Eden, New South Wales dedicated to bay whaling. The experience gripped my imagination for the museum contained the skeleton of Old Tom, a killer whale or orca. Old Tom was the last of a pack of killer whales who used to aid humans hunt whales as they migrated down the east coat of Australia.The orcas would drive the whales into the bay from the open sea, then alert the whalers at their station on the shore by splashing with their tails. The orcas and men would then hunt down the whale, the orcas receiving parts of the whale as their share.
Many years later I used the relationship of orcas and humans as an element in my story Adventure at Whaler’s Bay.
